Ways to Apply A Tarp to Your Roof After A Hurricane

**This article was originally published on September 21, 2017, and updated on Nov 18, 2020.

If a hurricane damages your roof, your main concern will naturally stop any water from getting inside. While it may take weeks or even months to get a roofer or insurance adjuster to visit your house, a tarp can be put in place swiftly. A properly installed tarp can not only help prevent any further water intrusion, which reduces the insurance companies cost but can help you get your life back to normal.

Different Ways of Applying a Tarp to your Roof

There are a variety of ways to apply a tarp to your roof after a storm, the most effective ways being:

  1. You can use sandbags to keep the tarp in place, which will allow easy access for the insurance adjuster.
  2. You can use 2-3-inch-wide double-sided tape to secure the tarp to the tile.
  3. For a quick and easy solution, you can use new adhesive tarps.
  4. You can hire a licensed professional to use furring strips to hold the tarp down but make sure they do not nail a tarp directly into the roof.

If you need to remove damaged tiles during this process, keep some of the tiles you remove. These can be samples that you can show to your roofer insurance adjuster, and your contractor may want to use them to help him locate the same or similar tiles for repair. Be sure to take pictures of the damage before installing a roof tarp to have for your records.

What Not To Do

It is essential not to nail a tarp into the roof shingles. The conventional method of nailing a tarp directly to the roof can jeopardize the integrity of the roof. It can also create additional expenses to the insurance companies and lead to the possibility of them denying your claim.
